The best CV builders: a 2026 comparison
Most CV builders look alike in their templates. The real differences are elsewhere: what a free account can download, what happens when the trial ends, whether the AI invents things on your behalf, and which languages you can write your resume in. This piece compares Letterin with the four most popular tools on exactly those points. It is on Letterin's own site, so we wrote down where the others are stronger too.
- On most popular tools a free account downloads TXT only; a PDF comes with a paid trial that renews on its own.
- On Letterin editing and PDF/DOCX downloads are free and unlimited; only AI usage is metered.
- Letterin opens a separate copy for each posting and applies no AI suggestion until you accept it; nothing that is not on your CV is added.
How we compared
We asked five questions. Can a free account download a PDF or Word (DOCX) file? How does the paid plan start, and does it renew on its own? Can you tailor your CV to each posting separately? Is an AI suggestion applied directly, or do you see it first? Which languages do the interface and the CV come in?
Prices were read from each tool's own pricing page in October 2026. They change often; check that page once before you sign up.
Zety and Resume.io: strong templates, a subscription after the trial
Zety and Resume.io are the two best-known names in the field. Both have large template libraries, mature editors and plenty of example text. For someone starting from a blank page, the guidance helps.
Their business models are similar: a free account downloads plain text (TXT) only, a PDF needs a low-cost trial, and the subscription starts on its own when the trial ends. In October 2026 Zety charged $1.95 for 14 days and then $25.95 every 4 weeks; Resume.io charged $2.95 for 7 days and then $29.95 every 4 weeks. Complaints from people who missed the trial deadline are common on review sites.
Enhancv and Kickresume: design and AI writing
Enhancv stands out with eye-catching, modern designs and content suggestions, plus tools for interview prep and application tracking. Its free use is limited to 7 days and a capped number of section items, the free resume carries Enhancv branding, and it downloads as PDF.
Kickresume has a lasting free plan and AI writing tools, and gives students a free stretch of Premium.
Where Letterin is different
A free account edits without limit and downloads PDF and Word files with no watermark. There is no trial and no subscription that starts on its own. The only metered thing is AI: the free plan includes about three tailoring runs a month. Pro is $7.99 a month or $17.99 for three months; if you would rather not subscribe, 5 credits that never expire cost $4.99.
The second difference is the tailoring itself. Your master CV is kept once, each posting gets its own copy, and the AI proposes a rewrite of your summary, bullets and skills for that posting. Nothing is applied silently: you accept or reject each suggestion section by section. No company, title, date, figure or skill that is not on your CV gets added; the server checks every suggestion against its source.
The third is language. The interface and the CV come in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish, and you can open a copy of the same CV in another language.
Which one to pick
If you want to choose from many templates and lean on ready-made example sentences, Zety or Resume.io will do the job; write down the cancellation date before the trial ends. If you want a visually unusual resume, look at Enhancv.
If you send a different CV to every posting, write your CV in more than one language, and want to see what the AI wrote before it is applied, Letterin was built for that. It has fewer templates than they do (five), and every one exports as real text an ATS can read.
Questions
Is there a completely free resume builder?
Most tools let you edit for free and charge for the download. On Letterin a free account downloads your CV as PDF or Word, without a watermark and without limit. You pay only for AI rewriting, and that starts with a free monthly allowance of a few runs.
Why does the Zety or Resume.io trial fee matter?
Because when the trial ends the plan renews on its own at more than ten times the trial price. In October 2026 Zety charged $25.95 every 4 weeks and Resume.io $29.95 every 4 weeks. If you take a trial, note the cancellation date on day one.
Which tool is best for a CV in several languages?
Letterin keeps the interface language and the CV language separate, in six languages, and writes every AI suggestion in the CV's own language, which is checked rather than assumed. A German or French version of the same CV is its own document, opened in one step.
